  • Capitalize nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and pronouns, short ones too: Is, It, Be, His.
  • Keep lower articles, short conjunctions and short prepositions: a, an, the, and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet, as, at, by, in, of, off, on, per, to, up, via.
  • Hyphenated words get a capital on each part: Self-Driving, Long-Term.

AP, APA, Chicago and MLA

The style guides agree on most titles and differ on a few small words.

StyleWhat it keeps lower
AP (news)Articles, conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer
APA (academic)Articles, conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer
Chicago (books)Articles, coordinating conjunctions and all prepositions, even long ones like about and between
MLAArticles, prepositions, coordinating conjunctions and the to in infinitives

This tool matches AP and APA. For Chicago or MLA, check any preposition of four letters or more, such as from, with or about, and lower it by hand.

Title case or sentence case?

Title Case suits book, film, song and article titles. Sentence case, where only the first word and names get a capital, is what most websites, apps and newspapers now use for headings, because it reads faster. Pick one and use it everywhere on a page.

Questions

What is title case?

A way of writing titles where the main words start with a capital and short words like a, of and the stay lower, unless they come first or last. For example: The Lord of the Rings.

Which words are not capitalized in a title?

Articles (a, an, the), short conjunctions (and, but, or, nor) and short prepositions (at, by, in, of, on, to) stay lower case, unless they are the first or last word.

Is "is" capitalized in a title?

Yes. Is is a verb, so it takes a capital in every style, even though it is short. The same goes for be, it and his.

What is the difference between title case and sentence case?

Title case capitalizes most words: How to Make a Website. Sentence case capitalizes only the first word and names: How to make a website.

Does this follow APA or AP style?

Yes: both keep articles, conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer in lower case, which is what this tool does. Chicago also lowers longer prepositions, so check those by hand.
