ClipTen Where is the clipboard
Where is the clipboard on my computer?
It is not a folder and not a file, which is why you cannot find it. Here is what the clipboard is, and how to see what is on it on Windows, Mac and Chromebook.
Quick answer
Checked October 2026 by the founderThe clipboard is not a place on your disk. It is a small piece of memory that holds whatever you copied last. To see it:
- Windows 11 and 10: press Win+V. The first time, click Turn on.
- Mac: in Finder, choose Edit › Show Clipboard. On macOS Tahoe 26, ⌘+Space then ⌘+4 shows recent copies too.
- Chromebook: press Everything+V.
- Anywhere: paste into a blank note. What appears is what is on the clipboard.
Want a copy to stay where you can find it? ClipTen keeps ten on your number keys, even after a restart: Ctrl+C+1 saves, Ctrl+V+1 pastes.
What the clipboard is
The clipboard is where your computer holds something you copied or cut, until you paste it. Press Ctrl+C (or ⌘+C on a Mac), and the selected text, image or file goes onto it. Press Ctrl+V, and a copy comes back out.
Three things about it surprise most people:
- It holds one thing. Each copy replaces the last.
- It lives in memory. Shut the computer down and it is empty.
- It has no window of its own. You see it only by pasting, or through a clipboard history tool.
When you copy a file, the clipboard does not hold the file itself. It holds a note of where the file is, and the file is copied when you paste.
Where is the clipboard on Windows?
Press Win+V. That opens the clipboard panel, with your recent copies, newest first. The first time it asks you to Turn on clipboard history; after that it keeps your last 25 copies until you restart.
The settings are in Settings › System › Clipboard. There is no clipboard file to open in File Explorer, and old Windows XP tools such as clipbrd.exe are gone. More on Windows clipboard history →
Where is the clipboard on a Mac?
- Click the desktop or a Finder window.
- From the menu bar choose Edit › Show Clipboard.
A small window shows the one item on the clipboard now. It is not a history: copy something else and the window changes. On macOS Tahoe 26 and later, Spotlight can list recent copies too: switch on Results from Clipboard in System Settings › Spotlight, then press ⌘+Space then ⌘+4. More on Mac clipboard history →
Where is the clipboard on a Chromebook?
Press Everything+V, where the Everything key is the search or launcher key. A menu shows your last five copies. Click one to paste it.
On a phone
On Android, the clipboard is in your keyboard: tap the clipboard icon on the Gboard or Samsung Keyboard toolbar. On an iPhone there is nowhere to see it; paste into a note. The iPhone clipboard, step by step. Clipboard history on every device →

Copied text can carry hidden formatting, links or invisible characters that a plain paste does not show. Our free clipboard viewer shows every format your copy holds, right in the browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Where ClipTen fits
The clipboard forgets on purpose: one item, gone at the next copy or restart. That is fine until you need the same few things again and again.
ClipTen adds ten clipboards that do not forget. Ctrl+C+1 saves a copy to key 1, and Ctrl+V+1 pastes it, in any app. On a Mac it is ⌘+C+1 and ⌘+V+1. Each slot keeps formatting, images and files, and is still there after a restart. Slots 1 to 5 are free. See how it works →
