ClipTen Copy and paste not working

Copy and paste not working? How to fix it on Windows and Mac

First find out which part is broken: the keys, one app, or the clipboard itself. Then the fix is usually one step.

Quick answer

  1. Test the keys: right-click and choose Copy, then Paste. If that works, the keyboard or shortcut is the problem.
  2. Test another app: copy and paste in Notepad or TextEdit. If that works, the first app is the problem; restart it.
  3. Restart the clipboard: on Windows, restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager. On a Mac, quit pboard in Activity Monitor.
  4. Still stuck? Restart the computer. On Windows choose Restart, not Shut down.

Not sure if anything copied at all? Copy something, then press Ctrl+V in our clipboard viewer. If it shows up there, the clipboard works.

1. Is it the keys?

Select some text, right-click, choose Copy, then right-click somewhere else and choose Paste. If the menus work but the shortcuts do not:

  • A stuck or broken key: on Windows, open the On-Screen Keyboard (osk in Start) and watch whether Ctrl lights up on its own. Try the other Ctrl key, or Ctrl+Insert to copy and Shift+Insert to paste.
  • A remapped shortcut: on a Mac, check System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › App Shortcuts for anything set to ⌘+C or ⌘+V. On Windows, check keyboard tools such as PowerToys Keyboard Manager or a gaming keyboard’s software.
  • A terminal: in Windows Terminal and most Linux terminals, Ctrl+C stops a command. Use Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+Shift+V.

2. Is it one app?

Copy in one app and paste into Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac). If that works, the problem is the app you started in:

  • Quit and reopen it. Apps that hang hold on to the clipboard.
  • Websites can block pasting on purpose, often in password and “confirm email” boxes. That is the site, not your computer.
  • Some sites block copying by disabling selection. Printing the page to PDF, or reader view, usually gets the text.
  • Excel refuses when the copy area and paste area are different shapes. Select a single cell before pasting.

3. Fix the clipboard on Windows 11 and 10

  1. Clear it: press Win+V and choose Clear all, or Settings › System › Clipboard › Clear clipboard data.
  2. Restart Windows Explorer: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find Windows Explorer, right-click and choose Restart.
  3. Remote Desktop: if copy and paste fails between your PC and a remote one, open Task Manager on the remote PC, end rdpclip.exe, then run rdpclip from Start to restart it. Check the Clipboard box under Local Resources before connecting.
  4. Virtual machines: turn on shared clipboard in the VM’s settings, and install its guest tools.
  5. Repair system files: open Terminal as administrator and run sfc /scannow, then restart.

If only the Win+V panel is broken, and copy and paste itself works, that has five fixes of its own →

4. Fix the clipboard on a Mac

  1. Restart pboard, the process that runs the clipboard: open Activity Monitor, search for pboard, select it and click the stop button, then Force Quit. macOS starts it again at once. In Terminal, killall pboard does the same.
  2. Relaunch Finder: hold Option, right-click Finder in the Dock and choose Relaunch.
  3. Between your iPhone and Mac: Universal Clipboard needs the same Apple Account, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on, and Handoff on in System Settings › General › AirDrop & Handoff. Turn Handoff off and on again.
  4. Restart the Mac if none of that works.

5. Something else is on the clipboard

Clipboard managers, remote-support tools, screen recorders and password managers all watch the clipboard. If problems started after installing one, quit it and test again. That includes ClipTen: plain Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V are meant to work exactly as before with it running, and if they do not, tell us and we will fix it.

Where ClipTen fits

When the clipboard has to be restarted, whatever was on it is gone. ClipTen keeps ten copies you choose in slots that are saved, encrypted, on your disk: Ctrl+C+1 saves, Ctrl+V+1 pastes. A restart of Explorer, pboard or the whole computer leaves them where they were. Slots 1 to 5 are free. See how it works →

Questions

Why is my copy and paste not working?

Usually one of three things: the keyboard shortcut (a stuck Ctrl key or a remapped shortcut), one app that has hung or blocks pasting, or the clipboard process itself. Right-click Copy and Paste to test the keys, and try Notepad or TextEdit to test the app.

How do I reset the clipboard on Windows?

Clear it from Settings › System › Clipboard › Clear clipboard data, then restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager. If it still fails, restart the PC with Restart rather than Shut down.

How do I fix copy and paste on a Mac?

Open Activity Monitor, search for pboard and force quit it. macOS restarts it straight away. In Terminal, killall pboard does the same. If that does not help, relaunch Finder or restart the Mac.

Why can't I copy and paste in Remote Desktop?

The rdpclip.exe process on the remote PC handles the shared clipboard. End it in Task Manager on the remote PC and run rdpclip again. Also check that Clipboard is ticked under Local Resources in the Remote Desktop settings.

Why can't I paste into a website?

Some sites block pasting on purpose, often in password and confirm-email boxes. That is a choice the site made. Type it in, or paste in a different field.
  • Slots 1 to 5 free, no daily limit
  • No card, no subscription
  • All 10 slots for $15, once

On a Mac, it installs in about a minute with one line in Terminal.
