Strong password generator
Make a strong, random password of any length from 6 to 64 characters, on your own computer. Nothing is sent or saved; the randomness comes from your browser’s cryptographic generator.
How to use it
- Choose a length. 16 or more is a good default; 20 is better.
- Keep all four character types on unless a site refuses symbols.
- Press Copy, then save it in your password manager straight away.
What makes a password strong
Length and randomness, not cleverness. A password made by a person follows patterns that cracking tools know: a word, a capital at the start, a number and an exclamation mark at the end. A random one has no pattern, so the only attack is trying every option.
The strength shown under the password is its entropy in bits. Each extra bit doubles the guesses needed. A 20-character password from all four sets is about 130 bits, far beyond what any computer can try.
| Bits | Rating | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Under 50 | Weak | 8 lower-case letters |
| 50 to 74 | Fair | 10 characters, all sets |
| 75 to 99 | Strong | 14 characters, all sets |
| 100 or more | Very strong | 16 or more characters, all sets |
8, 12, 16 or 20 characters?
Drag the length slider to the number a site asks for. With all four character types on, each character adds about 6.4 bits:
| Length | Strength | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 8 characters | About 51 bits, fair | Only where a site allows no more |
| 12 characters | About 77 bits, strong | Everyday accounts |
| 16 characters | About 103 bits, very strong | Email, banking, work |
| 20 characters | About 129 bits, very strong | Password managers, Wi-Fi, anything important |
How this one is made
The page asks your browser’s crypto.getRandomValues for random numbers, the same source used for encryption keys. Numbers that would make some characters slightly more likely than others are thrown away, so every character is equally likely. At least one character from each set you choose is included, then the order is shuffled.
The password exists only in this tab. It is not sent, logged or stored, and it is gone when you leave the page.
Keeping it
Do not try to remember random passwords; use a password manager such as the one built into your browser, Apple Passwords, Bitwarden or 1Password, and turn on two-step sign-in for important accounts. Copying a password puts it on your clipboard, so clear the clipboard afterwards on a shared computer: the clipboard viewer shows how.
