What lorem ipsum is

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin taken from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a text by Cicero from 45 BC. Printers have used it as filler since the 1500s, and designers still do, because it has the rhythm and word lengths of real text without words a reader stops to read. That keeps feedback on the layout, not on the copy.

What lorem ipsum dolor sit amet means

The passage comes from Cicero’s line “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…”: “Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain…”. Lorem is not a Latin word; it is the end of dolorem (pain), cut off at the start. So lorem ipsum dolor sit amet means roughly “pain itself, because it is pain”, with the first word broken.

This is the standard paragraph most designers know. The generator opens with its first line when Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” is ticked.

How much to generate

  • A web page section: 2 or 3 paragraphs.
  • A card or a product description: 2 to 3 sentences.
  • A heading or a button: 3 to 6 words.
  • A long article template: 8 to 10 paragraphs.

When to stop using it

Placeholder text hides problems real text would show: a headline that is three lines long, a button label that does not fit in German, or a product name that wraps. Swap in real copy as early as you can. Count the real copy against your layout with the word counter.
