Currency to words converter
Type an amount like USD 3 million, pick a currency, and get it converted and written out the way that country says it. Dollar to rupees in words comes out in lakh and crore; rupees to dollars in million and billion. Cheque style too.
You typed: 3,000,000.00 USD — Three million US dollars
How to use it
- Type the amount. Shortcuts work: 3m, 3 million, 2.5 crore, 75 lakh, 500k, or a symbol like € 45,250.
- Pick the currency it is in, and the currency you want. Your own currency is picked for you from your browser’s language settings.
- Read the converted amount in words. Choose Cheque style for “Rupees … Only”, then press Copy.
Why the same money has different words
A dollar amount said in India sounds nothing like the same amount said in the US. Americans group digits in threes and count in thousands, millions and billions. India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka group the first three digits and then pairs, and count in thousands, lakhs and crores. So 30,000,000 in New York is 3,00,00,000 in Mumbai: thirty million there, three crore here.
Most converters stop at the number. This one says the converted amount the way the person reading it will say it, so an Indian client sees crore and lakh and an American client sees million.
| International | Indian | Digits |
|---|---|---|
| One hundred thousand | One lakh | 1,00,000 |
| One million | Ten lakh | 10,00,000 |
| Ten million | One crore | 1,00,00,000 |
| One hundred million | Ten crore | 10,00,00,000 |
| One billion | One hundred crore | 1,00,00,00,000 |
| One trillion | One lakh crore | 1,00,00,00,00,00,000 |
Need only the number, with no money in it? Use the million to crore converter or number to words.
Dollar to rupees in words
To write dollars in rupees in words, multiply by the day’s rate, then say the rupee figure in lakh and crore. The table uses an example rate of 90 rupees to the dollar so the words are easy to follow; the converter above uses today’s rate and gives the exact figure.
| Dollars | Rupees at 90 | In words |
|---|---|---|
| 50 dollars | 4,500 | Four thousand five hundred rupees |
| 500 dollars | 45,000 | Forty-five thousand rupees |
| 1,000 dollars | 90,000 | Ninety thousand rupees |
| 5,000 dollars | 4,50,000 | Four lakh fifty thousand rupees |
| 10,000 dollars | 9,00,000 | Nine lakh rupees |
| 50,000 dollars | 45,00,000 | Forty-five lakh rupees |
| 1 lakh dollars (100,000) | 90,00,000 | Ninety lakh rupees |
| 1 million dollars | 9,00,00,000 | Nine crore rupees |
Going the other way, rupees to dollars come out in thousands and millions: 2.5 crore rupees is about 278 thousand dollars at the same example rate.
Where the rates come from
Rates are mid-market reference rates from ExchangeRate-API, refreshed every day, with a second source if that one is down. The time of the last update is shown under the result. A bank or card will charge a little more than the mid-market rate, so treat the result as the fair value, not the amount that will land in an account.
The amount you type never leaves your browser. The page downloads the day’s rate table once and does the arithmetic on your computer, digit by digit, so large amounts do not lose cents to rounding.
Cheque style
Cheques and invoices want the amount spelled out with capitals, the minor unit and the word Only: Rupees Two Crore Fifty Lakh and Fifty Paise Only, or Three Million US Dollars and Twenty Cents Only. Pick Cheque style and the converter writes it that way, with paise, cents, pence, fils or whatever the currency uses.
Japanese, Chinese and Korean amounts
Yen, yuan and won are counted in groups of four digits: 万 (ten thousand), 億 or 亿 (a hundred million) and 兆 (a trillion). For those currencies the converter adds the amount as it is written there, such as 4億5,000万円, next to the English words.
