### How to use it

- Type or paste a number. Commas are fine, and so are words like 2.5 million or 12 lakh.
- Choose Million, billion or Lakh, crore, and how to write it: plain words, currency, cheque or ordinal.
- Pick the capitals you need and press Copy.

### Two ways to say a big number

English has two common ways to name large numbers. The international system groups digits in threes: thousand, million, billion, trillion. The Indian system, used in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, names every two digits after the first thousand: thousand, lakh, crore, and then lakh crore.

| Number | International words | Indian words |

| 1,00,000 | One hundred thousand | One lakh |

| 25,00,000 | Two million five hundred thousand | Twenty-five lakh |

| 1,00,00,000 | Ten million | One crore |

| 1,23,45,678 | Twelve million three hundred forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-eight | One crore twenty-three lakh forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-eight |

### “And” or no “and”

American English usually writes 105 as one hundred five; British and Indian English say one hundred and five. Both are correct. The converter leaves “and” out unless you tick the box, and cheque style always puts it before the cents or paise, which is how banks expect it.

### Amount in words in Indian rupees

Indian cheques, invoices and forms write the amount with Rupees first and Only at the end, in lakh and crore. Choose Lakh, crore, then Cheque with INR, and the converter writes it this way:

| Amount | In words |

| 1,500 | Rupees One Thousand Five Hundred Only |

| 25,000 | Rupees Twenty-Five Thousand Only |

| 1,50,000 | Rupees One Lakh Fifty Thousand Only |

| 10,50,000 | Rupees Ten Lakh Fifty Thousand Only |

| 2,35,00,000 | Rupees Two Crore Thirty-Five Lakh Only |

| 4,999.50 | Rupees Four Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Nine and Fifty Paise Only |

### Numbers on cheques

Banks read the amount in words before the digits, so write it so nothing can be added: start with the currency, end with Only, and put the minor unit last. Rupees One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand and Fifty Paise Only. Choose Cheque and any currency, and the converter writes it that way.

### Number to words for writing a check

On a US check, the dollars go in words and the cents are usually written as a fraction of 100: 1,250.75 becomes One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100, with a line drawn to the end of the space so nothing can be added. The converter writes the cents in words instead (and seventy-five cents), which is also clear; for the fraction style, copy the dollar words and add the cents over 100 yourself.

### Decimals and ordinals

Plain numbers with decimals are read digit by digit after the point: 3.14 is three point one four. Money is different: 3.14 dollars is three dollars and fourteen cents. Ordinals turn the last word into a position: 21 becomes twenty-first, 1000 becomes one thousandth.
